"Minecraft is a game about placing blocks while running from skeletons. Or something like that.."

As most of you already know, I've been running a Minecraft server for our little group, so I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to make a thread about the game. You can discuss things related to the server here, or talk about Minecraft in general. It might also be helpful to have some useful links gathered in here for newer players. I'll cover that and explain some of the basics below.
As a new player, the first thing you'll want to know is how to craft tools. This page here has the full list of recipes and is updated when new ones are added.
I hand out operator privileges to most people after having them play normally for a short while, so I should also discuss the op commands I'm okay with you guys using. Those would be /give and /tp.
/give is the command to spawn blocks and equipment. The proper format for a /give command is this:
/give [Your name] [item DEC ID] [quantity]
For example, saying /give Reidar 57 64 would give a player named Reidar 64 blocks of solid diamond. The full list of data values for the /give command can be found here.
/tp is the command for teleportation. The proper format for a teleport command is this:
/tp [name of person to be teleported] [name of teleportation target]
Saying /tp Reidar DizzyK18 would send Reidar to Dizzy, for example. You can see everyone who is currently online by saying /list. I believe you can issue the /list command without being an operator.
Regardless of your operator status, you may also return to the spawn point at any time by saying /home.
I only have two rules regarding the use of operator commands that I make every new op swear to uphold. Never spawn bedrock or fire, and get my permission before spawning TNT or lava.
I keep the server offline until somebody asks me to set it up, but I am always happy to oblige. The easiest way to contact me about this is through Steam. I'm Reidar in our Steam group. If I happen to be in the stream it's perfectly okay to ask me there, as well. I'd rather not post the IP for the server here, but again, you can ask for that info through Steam or in the stream.
If you like to play single player here are two tools you can use to change things up a bit: INVEdit is a pretty simple utility. You can use it to add or remove items from your inventory. It's good for experimenting with different items or just blatantly cheating. MCEdit is a little more complex. You can use this to edit the maps in your save files. You can get a little more creative with this one, removing certain types of blocks, replacing them with others, importing stuff from other maps etc. I mostly use it for putting out wildfires and removing bedrock. :V
In closing:
