Rather than having an involved hand in the humanverse's creation, it seems more likely that the trolls received a giant pop-up window from Skaia asking: "do you want to make this Universe", and the only option was "yes".
So, with that out of the way, let us look at how the kid's lives are the reward that the trolls are looking for. In the most obvious instance: Karkat-John. John's dad, unlike Karkat's lusus, is supportive, doesn't need to be subdued with a good beating, and seems to not have a mild hatred of his charge. In short, John's life is everything that Karkat's wasn't, obviously feeding into the latter's hatred/kismessitude towards the former.
In a few other examples I have theorized out, Tavros's influence on John is that he wished his Lusus could... just do something. Tinkerbull is great for companionship, but a little useless for anything else. Counter that to John's dad, a point which requires no further explanation to be made.
Gamzee it seems, wishes his guardian had been there more often for him, but sadly it is always out at sea. Counter this to John's dad, who is there at every stage of the boy's life.
Those are the examples I can list off the top of my head, and that's just with John and three trolls.
Another point: The kids's guardians can talk.

Look at Hussie's formspring.
The reward is they get to go to the universe they created and rule as gods.

Ah, the ever elusive Formspring, the thing I never actually check.
There goes that theory.
